From Pisa's Leaning Tower to Italy's first Pride: SMILE, YOU'RE BEING RECORDED

The untold story of Italy's queer awakening begins in Pisa - the city of the Leaning Tower, and of a revolution that refused to stand straight.

Before visibility became a brand, it was a risk.

I am presenting SMILE, YOU'RE BEING RECORDED, a new English-language queer nightlife novel by Italian author Enrico M. - a cinematic story about memory, desire, surveillance, VHS archives, club culture and the dangerous price of becoming visible before social media made exposure ordinary.

The novel is rooted in Pisa, known around the world for the Leaning Tower, but also tied to a crucial moment in Italian LGBTQ+ memory: in 1979, the city hosted what is widely regarded as Italy's first Gay Pride march.

This is the main story: SMILE. But the launch is strengthened by a second English release, DAMN IT! WHERE'S THE SEA?, a satirical historical comedy about Pisa, its lost sea, its Leaning Tower and its connection to the Pisa79 Pride milestone.

"This is not just a novel about clubs. It is about what happened before social media made visibility ordinary. It is about the generation that learned to be seen while still being afraid of being watched."
- Enrico M.
