Friendly Versilia - Nearby Pisa - The gay destination during summer!

Che la Toscana sia terra di libertà, lo dice la storia. Qui sono nati due grandi geni gay
dell'umanità, Michelangelo e Leonardo Da Vinci, qui v'era la capitale
mondiale della sodomia, la Fiorenze del trecento e del quattrocento, qui, nel 1853,
il Granduca Leopoldo I depenalizzò, primo in Italia, l'omosessualità, qui ci sono Pisa ed
Empoli, due città che con i loro registri delle unioni civili hanno fatto la storia nel cammino
delle coppie gay e lesbiche italiane verso la pari dignità.

Che la Toscana sia una grande bella terra, lo dicono tutti. Dalle grandi città d'arte ai
piccoli paesi medioevali, dalle maestose vette delle Apuane alle dolci colline del senese,
dalle selvagge spiaggie della costa livornese e grossetana alle rilassanti terme sparse in tutta
la regione, non v'è che l'imbarazzo della scelta per i vostri itinerari.
Che la Toscana sia terra ospitale verso gay e lesbiche, infine, lo dimostra
Friendly Versilia: un progetto nato nel 1998 volto a tirare fuori dalla
clandestinità la storica presenza omosessuale a Torre del Lago, un paesino incastrato tra lago e
mare, tra Viareggio e Pisa, e sostenuto dagli operatori economici gay e gay-friendly della
zona. Nonostante le mille difficoltà che un progetto di questo tipo incontra ovunque, in
Italia come in qualunque altro paese del mondo, oggi Friendly Versilia attira ogni estate almeno
100.000 omosessuali di sesso maschile e femminile da tutta Europa, dalla fine di aprile
agli ultimi giorni di settembre.

Torre del Lago piccola ma promettente Sitges della costa tirrenica? Beh, in parte sì. Basta
passeggiare per la cittadina toscana durante le giornate più affollate per scoprire
coppie dello stesso sesso camminare tranquillamente mano nella mano.
Basta fare due passi alla Lecciona, "mitica" e bellissima spiaggia, per capire che non è
semplice in Italia trovare così tanti gay insieme. Basta scoprire l'accogliente ospitalità
dei tanti bed & breakfast gay e gay-friendly di Viareggio e Torre del Lago o per chi è più
sportivo farsi una settimana di campeggio, per scoprire un modo "europeo" di fare vacanza gay.
Basta passare una nottata sulla Marina di Torre del Lago per scoprire uno dei più sensazionali
fenomeni del divertimento gay. Basta venire durante il giorni del
Mardi Gras, una sorta di "gay pride" estivo, diretto dall'incontenibile Fabio Canino,
o durante uno dei tanti eventi che si organizzano da maggio a settembre, per capire
come ci siano ben pochi posti in Europa dove i
gay e le lesbiche possano divertirsi così tanto.

Tuscany is a land of freedom, that's a fact. Tuscany gave birth to two of the most important geniuses of mankind, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci.
Florence has been the capital of sodomy between the fourth and fifth century.
Gianluca Leopoldo I in 1853 was the first who in Italy decriminalized
homosexuality. Pisa and Empoli the first two towns which have agreed to keep a
Register for the Civil Unions of both gay and lesbian couples, a big first step
indeed for the GLBT community.

Pick any place of Tuscany and discover the beauty of this region, from the
majesty of the Apuanians Mountains to the sweet Sienese hills, from the wild
sand beaches nearby Livorno and Grosseto to the relaxing hot springs all over
Tuscany.

This region has always been very welcoming towards gays and lesbians.
"Friendly Versilia" is a project started in 1998 with the aim of giving
visibility to the large and still hidden GLBT community in Torre del Lago, a
nice town between waters, those of the sea and those of Massaciuccoli Lake,
between Viareggio and Pisa. The project was created by the GLBT local
switchboard, supported by the local Municipality and sponsored by gay and
gay-friendly business. No matter the difficulties and the hard times, Friendly
Versilia is today able to attract over 100.000 homosexuals both men and women
from all Europe, from the last week of April until the first week of September.

Torre del Lago a new promising Sitges on the Thyrrenian Sea? Well, it
may as well be. Walking along the promenade or the city centre and discovering
lots of gay and lesbian couples walking hand in hand is a visibil result of what
Friendly Versilia has been able to do. The Lecciona beach will not only surprise
you for its beauty and expansebut also for the huge crowd of gays and lesbians
that do gather here every summer. Lots of either gay or gay-friendly B&Bs both
in Viareggio and Torre del Lago, campings and many other accomodations.

The promenade of Torre del Lago is packed with restaurants, pubs, disco-pubs and
a lot more; The famous italian Mardi Gras is annualy hosted on this beautiful
promenade and gathers thousands of members of the GLBT community. Presented by
Fabio Canino, hylarious and sharp Radio and Tv star, Mardi Gras is a great
occasion to come to visit Torre del Lago and enjoy each night of your stay.
Mardi Gras is not the only occasion though, calendar is rich in events from April until September.
